The industrial design of the former MacRobertson’s lolly factory provides the perfect backdrop for Joe and John’s minimalist way of living. The building is rich with natural materials – timber, brick and concrete – throughout, but the thing that ties it all together is the black steel.
The original steel windows at the front of the home inspired so many introduced elements in my design. The new Accent Aluminium window in the side wall aligns visually with the front window, then links to the new Accent Aluminium bi-fold doors. The bi-folds make a big change to both the appearance of the open plan area, and how the space opens up, introducing the boys to a new – indoor/outdoor – way of living within their environment.
I continued the lines further around the space, introducing them into the kitchen design in the form of the black internals to the Seaview Cabinets kitchen and island cabinetry which creates strong, linear forms, with the accented monochromatic base palette. The cabinet doors have a finger pull reveal rather than a handle and these have a natural black finish to further align with the linearity.
We filled in the open walls to the mezzanine bedroom above to give Joe and John privacy and relief from the noise and smells from the kitchen, and to block out the light so they can sleep. A quirky touch, the Accent Aluminium black-framed windows were inspired by one of the greats, Piet Mondri. They take on the modernism of the interior and add to the linear effect, making them something of an artwork in themselves.
