First room reveal of The Block 2020 last night! Which guest bedroom had you packing your overnight bag?
With its statement wallpaper and Velux skylights, Jimmy and Tam’s 1950s room had instant wow factor. The curtains and carpet were beautiful and the colour palette was spot on. Their room was ‘late Deco,’ almost edging into the ‘60s, and reminiscent of 1950s ‘Mad Men’ or a Slim Aarons tableau, with the timber bed and side tables referencing 1950s American beach culture.
Daniel and Jade’s 1930s room was well-researched and beautifully styled. Late 1930s design featured a strong oriental influence. Their reclaimed pendant light, and classic Deco skirts and arcs set the room in the Art Deco era. The delicate Chinoiserie artwork took the room in an Art Deco direction not many follow – an unexpected interpretation of the era that really worked.
You couldn’t help but be impressed by the raised ceiling and Velux skylights in Harry and Tash’s 1920s guest bedroom, the height was incredible! The styling struck a balance between ‘20s and contemporary, and while I didn’t love the carpet, the greys of the colour palette, and the artwork were reminiscent of the era, and Tash nailed it with the fluffy mules!
George and Sarah missed the 1940s mark in week 1. Their house has amazing period detail, but their architraves, skirting boards and sconces were all curves while the rest of the house was angular. I loved the colour palette and the throw on the bed – reminiscent of a rug from the era – and their paintwork was almost flawless. I felt their styling didn’t play to the character of the home, and while the study area was a smart idea, it was generic.
Luke and Jasmine’s 1910s guest room was devoid of the Federation references we were looking for. While the shutters, doors and ‘robes were on brief, the rest of the styling missed the mark. The colour palette, and simple shapes of their skirting and cornicing, was more modern Deco, and their room lacked the classic strapping and paneling of the era (which is featured liberally throughout the old house pointing them in the right direction).
