On the rare occasion that I get a weekend off, it’s no secret that I like to get behind the wheel of a ‘nice’ car, put the pedal to the metal, hit the open road, and explore the delights regional Victoria has to offer.
In October I was delighted to be able to accept Audi Barry Bourke’s invitation to take part in a ‘drive day’ out to Daylesford, and even more delighted that my good friend Belinda, Creative Director at OnceWas, was able to join me for the jaunt.
We arrived at Audi Barry Bourke’s Berwick HQ at 7am – teas and coffees were quickly dispatched to dispel an early-morning fogginess. The 20 participants introduced themselves before drive day leader Chris Charles shared an entertaining safety briefing, and outlined our route for the day. Then we were divided into two teams and set off in the first of the five Audis – the A5, SQ5, SQ7, RS3 and Q2 – we’d be driving and swapping throughout the day.
We took the long way to Daylesford, making our way through Warrandyte and Eltham (felt like home, um because it is), enjoying the spring green landscape, and the pleasingly windy roads, and stopping along the way to swap cars. A firm and outspoken fan of the Audi Q7, it was great to try some of the other models in the current Audi range. I particularly loved the RS3 – what a sporty little number that is!
Just after midday we arrived at the Lake House Daylesford, where we enjoyed a divine three-course lunch overlooking the lake (and a very sexy Audi R8 that we all had our photos taken in front of) where the white bean puree and local seedy bread and salmon potato salad were my two stand-out dishes.
Then it was back in the cars for the drive home, this time taking the more direct route which was the perfect opportunity to open up the throttle on the Audi S5 (at the legal speed limit I must point out!). Deceptively spacious inside, it’s another sporty model and I could visualise myself feeling as comfortable lining up at the start at Bathurst, as I would driving the freeway back into Melbourne.
Comfort and style are always in my thoughts when driving a car, and I’m happy to report each Audi we tested on the day ticked all the boxes and made me realise I’m more of a car person than I thought!
