Kristalia, the edgy industrial furniture brand from Italy, showcased some of their new products with a fun in-store event this week at Fanuli in Sydney.
While guests mingled over canapés and Galliano cocktails to the sounds of Sydney House Mafia’s DJ Silverfox, three urban street artists – Jumbo, Numskull and Roach – each created a one of a kind artwork, painted on a Kristalia Elephant chair.
Ruggero Magrini, one of Kristalia’s designers and founding partners, flew in from Italy for the event. He shared the story of how he was originally working in advertising when furniture clients would ask his opinion about designs. He started to do some designs for them and realised he had more than a knack for and interest in design and decided to pursue it further.
In 1994 he founded the company with other young entrepreneurs and as they say… the rest is history.
When it comes to creating furniture pieces, Ruggero says that for him form follows function. “It all starts with the technology and how different materials work together to create a functional product that is light yet strong,” he says.
“There’s actually minimal design but a lot of technology that goes into creating each piece. It’s about the combination of technology, different materials, art, ingenuity and design.”
