Last weekend I went along to Decoration+Design in Melbourne – an interior design industry trade fair.
A highlight of the fair is VIVID – Vibrant Visions in Design – a furniture design competition that gives emerging designers a launching pad into the industry. It’s a great showcase of local talent and original creations in the categories of commercial, concept, student and green.
I think Paul Townsin’s “Me & Me Too” lamps, are an interesting take on what can often be a generic looking spotlight floor lamp.
Paul says his desire is to design objects that have longevity, which is why the lamps are made from cast concrete and tubular steel.
“The concrete and steel also play different roles to their traditional use, where the steel is playing the major structural role and the concrete is assisting to tie the system together,” he says.
“The concrete also becomes the feature element highlighting the unique finishes that concrete can provide.”
The lamps are at the prototype phase at the moment but Paul hopes to be ready to make them later this year. Good luck Paul!

Also at the fair is the exhibit called DESIGN: MADE: TRADE. It’s a curated exhibit that showcases 30 of the best art and design studios. A real treasure trove of creative talent and designs.
Winner of the best stand went to Malinko, the work of industrial designer Marta Cherednik. She uses new and recycled materials, taking inspiration from science and nature.
Her designs are fun but practical like the Radiolarian lamp, which is sure to become a talking point in any room. And don’t you just love the Nest egg holder and ‘Take off’ Plant Pot? Too cute! I can’t wait until these products become available to buy.
