Sydney siders rejoice! After more than six years in Richmond, Melbourne, Zuster has also recently opened a showroom in Surry Hills in Sydney.
Zuster – which is Dutch for sister – is run by sisters Wilhelmina McCarroll (head designer and director) and Fleur Bouw (managing director).
Their furniture is known for its quality craftsmanship, handmade attention to detail and careful selection of timber grains. It is contemporary Australian design made to order in Melbourne and made to last.
I have used Zuster for the past five years for clients’ homes and they truly add elegance to each interior.
Wilhelmina says her design motto is to create classic items with clean lines with a strong emphasis on well-resolved interesting details. “Each piece must be crafted like a work of art,” she said.
“We mainly work in American oak as it is a beautiful blonde timber with consistent colour and grain. Structurally it is extremely strong which allows me to mould it into very fine bases like a stiletto heel and span it long distances without deflection.”
Their first collection dates back to 1995 while the latest collection – the Traverse – is their 26th. Well done ladies!
“The inspiration behind the Traverse range is a dressage movement called the half pass where the horse crosses its legs while moving over a diagonal line,” explains Wilhelmina.
“Every item in the new collection has a cross element. The main material used is American oak timber with some painted finishes included.”
