For me, inspiration can come from anywhere, at any time so, even when I’m ‘on holiday,’ I’m keenly observing everything around me and opening my imagination to new light, how colours are affecting me, new cultures, and the ways people interact within their environments. In fact, when I’m
relaxed I’m probably more receptive to cues from the world around me.
My most recent trip abroad was fuelled by a strong urge to be near the water, so I created an itinerary around coastlines, lakes, and waterways.
I found my creative receptors where finely tuned into the different colours of the ocean that calmed and centred me, different coloured sands from ochres to tans, sunrises and sunsets that warmed and nurtured me.
It’s from these vivid memories of aquas and turquoises and golds and sands that I’ve drawn inspiration for my next Harris Scarfe collection. These colourways are quite a departure so I’m pretty excited to get on the tools and start designing.
When people are seeking inspiration from travel for a creative project, whether it’s an interior or an artwork or something else, I tell them to think about elements that made them feel different, that resonated, and that they can’t shake the memory of. What makes the most impact on us when we’re travelling isn’t always the high-energy activities or seeing the sites, it’s the quiet moments in between the ‘holidaymaking’ that provide the inspiration we take home with us.
