It’s encouraging to see sustainable building practices making their return and becoming increasingly mainstream here in Australia. Employing hay bales and render, load-bearing cobb made from natural materials like clay, sand, and straw, and recycled materials such as shipping containers, in constructions used to be the preserve of hill-based 1970s hippies, but these materials and techniques re becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s sustainability-sensitive society.
Whether it’s choice of energy-conserving double glazing, positioning new builds to maximise thermo-efficiency, using louvered windows to draw air through a building, or installing reversible fans that draw cool air up push the warm air down from the ceiling during winter, there are a multitude of ways you can make your home more sustainable.
If you’re looking for inspiration for sustainable practices you can employ in your home renovation or building project check out Sustainable House Day which is on Sunday, September 16, this year, when Australia’s best environmentally sustainable homes will throw open their doors to the public.
